By Vincent Hoss

Nothing works all of the time. This means you’ll need to do a bit of digging to find the specific solution to your pest problem. Fortunately, there is a great deal of information below that will get you where you need to be.

A perimeter spray will discourage pests from getting too close to your home. Cover your home’s foundation, porch, steps and spaces near windows and doors. Make sure you are keeping your eyes open for any cracks. Use a caulk or sealer to plug these small areas off.

If you wish to know whether or not there are termites where you live, try hiring a dog to seek them out, not a person. A human professional will only be able to give you a partial diagnosis of your home. A termite-sniffing dog, on the other hand, can detect termites anywhere in your home. The seek methane gases that come from the termites’ wood eating process.

Because they are so skilled at hiding, it is hard to eliminate bed bugs. Before you attempt extermination, close off any holes. This prevents pest from running out from them once the extermination is done.

Outdoor lighting can attract pests, so try to keep this to a minimum. If you are using outdoor lighting, switch to light bulbs that are orange or yellow.

Even if the areas of your home that you usually live in show no signs of problems, check the whole home occasionally. If any part of your house is underground, subterranean termites may eat some of your home that you aren’t in that often. Damp basements, closets and crawl spaces should be evaluated to ensure that no infestation has occurred.

If you own a camper or trailer that you keep in storage, mice can find it, find a way inside, and treat it like home. Try using natural repellents to keep them away during all seasons of the year. These repellents smell fine and don’t cause any harm, but will stop mice from venturing into your camper or RV.

Store dry food items in plastic storage containers. Open boxes and bags in your cabinets are an open invitation for pests. Transfer your dry goods into tightly sealed bins each time you shop. By using plastic containers, you can prevent pests and keep food fresh longer.

Get to the bottom of where a pest is getting into your home. For example, maybe spiders are getting into your home through a small space in a window, or maybe one of your pets is bringing the pests inside. Once you know how the insect is coming in, you can fix the problem and prevent it from entering again.

Are you attempting to get rid of rodents in your home without help? If so, then understand that rodents literally eat anything. Peanut butter, cheese, meat, jelly, etc. can all work in a trap. You can also use spoiled food, as this works as well.

Hairspray is great for killing flying insects. Perfume also works, but don’t get either in your eyes. Both of these things are flammable, so keep away from an open flame when you use them. Use this solution if you are out of bug spray.

If your bug problem persists, you might not be using pesticides correctly. If you are spraying for pests outside, they may stay inside. You should spray inside and out.

If you have a problem with bees or wasps, you should mess with their hives and nests during the evening or night. Spray foams that can be purchased at a hardware store can be used to get rid of such insects. You can spray these foams from safe distances. Beehives are best dealt with at night, as the bees are less active than they are during the day. Check the hive for two days, and then spray again if you need to. Only remove the hive once you are positive there are no living bees inside.

Carpenter ants are attracted to damp environments. These insects only enjoy wet food, so this may be an indication of a possible leak or wood rot within your home. An expert will be able to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem and how to effectively address it.

Now that you have lots of material, you ought to have the power to get rid of pests. Use your know-how and take the necessary action. You will be so thrilled to get the critters out of your home.
