Got A Pest Problem? These Tips Could Help

By Vincent Hoss

Are there unknowns creeping around your home at nighttime? Things going bump in the night that you can’t identify? Both homeowners and renters face issues with pests and the problem cannot be solved on its own. Continue reading to get some terrific information about eradicating pests from your life.

Use steel wool to plug up holes that mice can use to enter your house. Steel wool will prove nearly impossible for even a rat to chew through. All openings greater than a 1/2 inch must be stuffed. Animals can get through very small openings.

If you are experiencing problems with insects, be sure to vacuum all rugs and carpets throughout your home. Vacuuming picks up ants, bugs, cockroaches and other insects that are living inside your home. Toss the bag when you are finished.

Do you have a fruit fly problem? Your drain may be the issue. Place some plastic wrap on a drain to see if small flies or other bugs appear. If the flies do appear, pour boiling water down the drain and scrub it clean. This should prevent fruit flies from making a nest in your drain.

Begin with the basics. A good way to deal with a household pest is to eliminate what they live on. Pests may be drawn to your house because water, food and shelter can be found there. Make sure you search for food scraps lying around, any water leaks in your plumbing, and openings in your home.

Seal all of the cracks that are in your home to control pests. Insects, and even small rodents, will use these cracks to get into your home, no matter how small these cracks are. Sealing these things up gives them no place to hide.

Mint is a great deterrent for keeping mice away. Mint should be planted around your home’s perimeter. This will cause mice to move elsewhere. If you have a rodent problem, try sprinkling mint leaves near where they’re hiding. This will keep mice away a lot of the time, but you have to use fresh mint leaves.

Keep your plumbing clear of debris if you would like to keep pests out of your home. Make sure you eliminate clogs in any drains. This can attract bugs like cockroaches and flies. Once you clear the drains, give them a monthly check.

There are solutions for those dealing with pests of all types. Go to your local home improvement store and ask the professionals there what you can do to eliminate these pests. They know what kinds of pesticides will work on the specific pests that are plaguing your home.

As soon as you notice fallen trees in your yard, eliminate them. Chop up the fallen tree, and use it for firewood. If you do not have a use for it, you can sell it or give it to someone. But, make sure to address the stump regardless. Termites will make a beeline for the stump if it just left outside.

Store dry food products in plastic containers. Most dry goods are in boxes and/or bags, which means that they can be accessed by pests easily. Every time you shop, transfer the dry goods into the plastic bins, and make sure that these are tightly sealed. Not only will this keep pests out, but it’ll help you make sure your foods stay fresh longer.

Keeping your food sealed or refrigerated is the best way to get rid of cockroaches. A bag clip is not good enough, ensure that sealed containers and zip-lock bags are used for food storage. Cockroaches are attracted by any sort of food. Be sure to keep baking ingredients, such as sugar and flours inside of sealed containers.

If you have a problem with bees or wasps, you should mess with their hives and nests during the evening or night. Homeowners can typically remove bee hives themselves using a spray foam from the hardware store. The foam will spray quite a way, so you don’t have to stand too close to the hive. The best thing to do is wait until nightfall to spray the beehive. Keep an eye on it for a few days in case another application is needed. Once you know the bees have died, the hive can be taken down.

Eliminating clutter gets rid of the bugs. Most homes have a lot of catch-all areas, such as book shelves, counter tops and table tops. Invest some time in reducing the clutter in your home to eliminate places where rodents and bugs like to nest.

Ask your neighbors for pointers. Your neighbor is likely to be dealing with the same pest. Even better, they may know some things that you never even thought about. It is also helpful to let them know in case they weren’t aware of the issue yet.

A carpenter ant infestation is a sign of a bigger issue. They like wood that is wet, so this would mean that there might be leaks or rotten wood inside your home. Get a professional to take a look at what you are facing to be safe.

Read the directions on pesticides very carefully and follow them well. If you’re not using them for their exact purpose, you probably won’t get the results you were looking for. Say you are told to distribute an application daily–you must do so faithfully. Not following the directions could prolong the problem.

Regardless of if you are a homeowner or a renter, you have a vested interest in keeping insects and rodents away. Utilize the tips found here to eradicate pests from your house once and for all. You should be able to live without seeing bugs running around.
