Make Your Home A Pest Free Environment

By Vincent Hoss

When you have pests in your home, you may feel like there is no end in sight. Even if you are taking active steps to deal with the problem, it might seem like the infestation is only growing worse. If you feel this way, try out the tips in this article and find what works for you.

If you are seeing bugs, make sure to vacuum your rugs often. You will vacuum up ants, bugs and other critters that are in the kitchen, living room and den. When you are done, properly dispose of the bag.

If you think you may have termites, but are not certain, call in the dogs. They beat humans at sniffing termites out. A person can only tell you what he sees. Not so with a dog! However, a dog that is properly trained is actually capable of ensuring a home’s safety one-hundred percent! The reason that dogs can do this is because they can smell methane gas which occurs when termites destroy wood.

Have you recently gotten rid of a bedbug infestation? If so, then do not assume your problem is gone. Bedbugs can remain dormant for up to a year. For this reason, you need to make sure you seal all holes and cracks in your floors and walls. They will not be able to get into these areas.

If you have food out it should always be sealed. Pests are always looking for food, and if they can smell it, they will be drawn to it. It is important not to let your trash linger in the barrel too long. Pests are also attracted to the scent of garbage.

If there are pests flying around inside, it’s important to fix the screens around your home. Screens not only protect your home from flying insects, they also help keep crawling insects from infiltrating your home. If your screens have holes in them, get them fixed so that bugs cannot enter.

Is your home infested with ants? A mixture of borax and sugar can help you eliminate ants from your home. The sugar will attract the pest, but the borax is going to kill bugs and small rodents. Mix a cup of sugar and a cup of borax in a quart jar. Poke holes through the lid to allow you to sprinkle it around the foundation and baseboards.

If your home has any cracks, then you should ensure that you immediately seal them. Pests can get into your home through these cracks. Sealing these things up gives them no place to hide.

Outside lights have their advantages but you should know these lights will attract pests. If you need outdoor lighting, try to use orange, pink, or yellow tinted bulbs since they don’t attract pest as much.

If you own a recreational vehicle that you don’t use in the winter, you’ve probably noticed that mice sometimes find their way inside. Thankfully, you can use natural repellents to discourage mice from entering and living in your camper. Bags of repellents that smell good aren’t poisonous, but keep mice out of your camper or RV.

If there are pets in your household, don’t put out rat and mouse poison. If one of your pets find the mouse, whether dead or alive, they could get poisoned as well. In addition, poison should never be used around young children. They’ll think the pellets are candy.

Research the type of pests that may be in or around your house. Determine why they are there based on the things they are attracted to. You must be adaptable to deal with a wide variety of pests.

Inspect walls and your foundation for cracks. Older houses are sure to have cracks and openings all around the foundations. Pests can enter the house through these cracks. Do not forget to look at the ceiling. Ceiling cracks can be a path for pests to enter your home.

Recycling could cause pests. Recycling is generally stored outdoors. If you cannot do this, thoroughly wash whatever you place inside the bin. You may also want to get recycling containers that are sealed.

If you find that bugs can easily get into your home, buy some caulk and seal up those cracks. You cannot get rid of everything with a fogger or spray. Seal the moldings around the sink, pipes, and where the wall meets your floor with caulk to prevent bugs from exiting and entering.

Ask neighbors for tips. Perhaps your neighbor is also having a mouse problem. You may find that your neighbor has come up with some solutions that you haven’t yet considered. You also might alert your neighbor to a problem that they have not yet discovered.

When you see carpenter ants, that is usually a sign of a much bigger problem. Carpenter ants feast on wet wood, so you may have leaks throughout your house. Get a professional to take a look at what you are facing to be safe.

It’s not easy to get rid of pests. Sometimes it takes weeks, months, years or decades to eradicate them. The tips you’ve read will help you eliminate the pests. You can rest assured that your house is free from pests.
