Pest Control Tips For The Novice Exterminator

By Vincent Hoss

Have you noticed any pests in your home? If you have, relax. The pests you’ve found most likely can be eliminated with a little pest control. For a lot of situations, you can handle the problem yourself. Read the tips provided below to help you eliminate these annoying pests.

Screens in your home should be repaired to keep out flying insects. Not only do the windows and screens keep out pests that fly, they can also keep the ones that crawl away as well. Repair any holes to prevent unwanted house guests.

Bedbugs hide in a variety of locations, making them hard to completely get rid of. Before you attempt extermination, close off any holes. Thus, you can prevent bugs from escaping after your efforts are concluded.

Place brushes a foot or more away from the home to keep pests from invading. Insects that nest in wild brush will enter your home if they are close enough. These pests will likely come right on into your home if the bush is located near a door or a window.

Don’t plant trees near your home if you have rat problems. If you do, rodents will climb up them and get on your roof to enter your attic. Plant the trees at least 15 feet away from the house.

If you are fighting a mice problem, you should consider using mint. Mint around your foundation of the house will help, and it’s a perennial. The smell will bother mice and other small animals. Try sprinkling some leaves where the mice live. This can repel the mice if the mint is fresh.

Outdoor lighting really does attract the pests. When it comes to outdoor light-fixtures, stick with yellow or pink because they attract the fewest number of insects.

Did you see rodents in your home? You need to look around the exterior of the house to find any cracks that animals can fit in. Cover these openings with scouring pads or use poison in these areas. Mustard oil may work as well.

If there are pets in your household, don’t put out rat and mouse poison. Even if you do not think they will get into the poison they might eat a rat that has poison in it. This bait is not recommended around kids either. Kids may think the pellet is candy.

If you notice a hole in your floor or walls that looks like is made by a mouse, you should stuff the hole with a little bit of steel wool. The mice or rats will eat it and they’ll end up dying. Spackle over the holes with putty for wood that is mixed together with steel wool to keep rodents away.

If you wish to permanently eliminate a pest in your home, you need to learn all you can about it. Know the particulars about it, like what it eats and its life cycle. The more you know, the easier it is to form a plan to rid yourself of it.

The first step to fixing your pest problem is to determine the point of entry they are using. You could have a space near a window or door that’s allowing pests to get in or your pet could even be bringing them inside. When you have realized how that insect is gaining access to your home, you can work on preventative measures.

Deal with bee hive or wasp nest problems after dark. You can usually get rid of a bee hive by yourself if you use a spray foam that you can get from a hardware store. These foaming insecticides can be sprayed long distances; they are also very effective against bees or wasps. Always spray beehives at night. This is when bees are much less active. When you’re sure all the bees are gone, then you can take the hive down.

If you can minimize the clutter, you’ll minimize the insects. There are so many places in our homes that are used for a catch-all, from tables to counters to bookshelves. Try reducing your clutter to remove these many nesting places for rodents and bugs.

The pests in your home have overstayed their welcome, and it’s time for them to leave. You’ve got it in you to get them out of your home. Using these tips can help you eliminate nearly any pest issue inside your home.
