By Vincent Hoss

Discovering you have a pest problem can be discouraging. Pest have the worst timing and tend to invade at bad times. There are many different ways to deal with a pest infestation. In this article, we will discuss a variety of proven approaches.

A good way to prevent pests is by vacuuming your carpets well and often. Vacuum your smaller rugs often as well. Any bugs you have in your home will be picked up. When you are finished, throw the bag in the garbage.

If you are wondering if you have termites, get a dog that can smell them. A dog can find termites better than a person who inspects homes for pests. Trained termite sniffing dogs can check your home out completely. When termites eat wood, they produce methane gas. That scent attracts the trained dog.

Be cautious when trying to eliminate bed bugs. Bedbugs can hibernate an entire year. Therefore, you should ensure that any openings in the floors and walls are kept closed. By doing this, it will be impossible for bedbugs to hide.

People who have problems with flying pests need to repair all of the screens in their home. Not only do the windows and screens keep out pests that fly, they can also keep the ones that crawl away as well. If your screens have holes in them, get them fixed so that bugs cannot enter.

Bed bugs like to hide in hard-to-find spaces, which makes them hard to eliminate. Before you call the exterminator, seal off any cracks or crevices. This will ensure that bedbugs cannot get to an area of the house you are not exterminating.

Make sure you thoroughly inspect your home for any standing puddles of water. Standing water attracts all kinds of pests. Inspect your home and look for leaky pipes. Also, the trays holding your indoor plants might conceal standing water, as well. Since pests need water in order to live, getting rid of excess water will make your home less desirable for them.

It can be awfully hard to eliminate fleas, but there are a few good tips to help you get rid of both the fleas and their eggs. The first thing to do is to thoroughly vacuum everyday, than spray the area with a good flea spray. Remember to throw away your vacuum bag after vacuuming your house.

Put some mint around the house to keep mice away. Just plant mint all around your foundation. This will make the foundation undesirable for mice to live in. Sprinkle mint leaves around affected areas if you have a mouse problem. This can get rid of most mouse problems; just remember to use fresh leaves.

Outdoor lighting can attract pests, so try to keep this to a minimum. Outdoor lighting in yellow, pink, and orange usually attract less bugs.

Even if you don’t think you have a problem, routinely check for one. If your home has a basement, termites may be operating in secret. Check crawl spaces and basements.

Plug in pest repellents are effective tools for eliminating bugs. These devices will emit a low buzzing noise that will keep rodents away when plugged in. You may not be able to hear it and it will not hurt you or your pets. Rodents will leave the area because the noise is unpleasant, not because it is harmful.

If trees fall, dispose of them. Cut up all the branches and the trunk as well to use for firewood. You can use it, sell it or just give it away. But, make sure to address the stump regardless. Stumps are pieces of wood that have died, and termites love them.

Drains can be very attractive to various pests. Be sure you clean and check them every month, either by using a snake or liquid drain cleaner. Debris and other things can cause mold to grow inside them, giving pests a great place to live.

Pests may be attracted to recycle bins. It is wise to store your recyclables outside your home. If you can’t do that, make sure you rinse everything you recycle. Recycling bins that are sealed are the best choice to keep out pests of all sizes.

Here is a trick you may want to try to successfully gather up all the silverfish present in your home. Leave a wet newspaper out while you sleep at night. Certain people claim that the silverfish were on the newspaper in the morning. Grab the silverfish quickly and toss them into an outdoor trash container.

One thing you can try to get rid of insects is caulking any cracks that you find around the house. Foggers and sprays will not be able to go behind your cabinets or deep inside your walls where the bugs are living. So, seal these areas off to prevent bugs. Use caulk around drain entry points, at molding spaces and any other small areas where bug can come in.

Many times when you see a spider it means there are other bugs in your home. Vacuum and dust daily to help rid your home of pests. This will greatly reduce the number of bugs in your home and you should see a corresponding reduction in spiders.

If you have a professional install stations to bait mice, make sure you find out where they are placed. You also need to keep all your pets away from the traps. Your pet can become ill or even die from the poison these bait stations contain.

They are different ways to control pests in your home. Safety is paramount in whichever method you finally find to deal with your pest problem. Although you want to eliminate your pests, you should ensure that the health of your loved ones isn’t put into jeopardy.
