Keep Your Family Pest-Free With These Tips

By Vincent Hoss

Have you seen any pests around your home lately? If you do, you are not alone. Do not panic. Eliminating pests is not as challenging as you may think. It is quite likely you can handle the problem without hiring a professional to assist you. The included pest control tips might be of use to you.

Vacuum every rug you own to remove pests. Any stray insects will be sucked up in the vacuum. When you are finished, throw the bag in the garbage.

If you suffer from an infestation of brown recluse spiders, try using sticky traps in order to catch them. These harmful spiders spend their time in hard to reach areas that are not easily accessible for chemicals. They look for food at night. Put the traps behind furniture to get them where they live.

Be careful if you think you finally got rid of all your bedbugs. Bedbugs can go without eating for a year. So that is why it is crucial to seal any holes you have in your walls or floors. Bedbugs will disappear if they have nowhere to hide.

There may be standing water hiding in your home, and you need to root it out. Pests are very attracted to standing water. Check your home thoroughly for leaking pipes, and don’t forget to empty and clean the trays under your house plants. All pests require water to be able to survive in your home.

Keep all yard waste at least one foot away from your home. Many types of insects call this brush home. Placing them too close to your entry points or windows can risk having them go inside your home.

Fleas are stubborn and it can be hard to make them disappear, but luckily there are ways to rid your home of them. First, vacuum every day and use flea sprays. Don’t forget to throw out the vacuum bag outside.

Outside lights have their advantages but you should know these lights will attract pests. Outdoor insects are attracted to any type of lighting, so use light bulbs that are not white, such as pink or yellow, if you wish to minimize this.

Eliminate fallen trees from your yard. You can even cut up the trunk or branches and use it for firewood. You can sell it, use it, or give it away. But, make sure to address the stump regardless. Stumps are dead, and dead wood attracts termites.

Are you finding rodents in your home? If so, then start inspecting the outside of your home for any tiny openings that they could have squeezed themselves through. Use steel wool to fill the holes and put some poison out. You could also try repellents with a strong aroma, such as strong oils.

Examine your foundation and your walls to see if there are any cracks. The older the property is, the more likely that some structural cracking will be occurring. These are easy access points for pests that can wiggle through tiny spaces. Check your ceilings too. You might see some cracks that bugs are getting into.

When fighting a rodent infestation, understand that the nasty critters feed on the same foods that you do. Peanut butter, cheese, savory foods, cheese and more are all great for traps. You can always use food that is no longer good as well.

If you have a cockroach problem, keep all food in sealed containers. A bag clip is not good enough, ensure that sealed containers and zip-lock bags are used for food storage. Cockroaches are attracted to all kinds of food. Be sure baking supplies are all safely stored in sealed canisters especially made for sugar and flour storage.

When you have flying bugs inside your home, use hairspray to kill them. Perfume also works, but don’t get either in your eyes. Both of these are flammable, so keep them away from open flames. If you don’t have any bug spray, these two items will work well.

If you are experiencing a bug problem, review how you applied the pesticide. Spraying solely your home’s exterior only ensures that you are trapping the bugs inside. Be certain to spray interior spaces also.

Eliminate the clutter in your home to get rid of potential pest problems. Most homes have a lot of catch-all areas, such as book shelves, counter tops and table tops. Decluttering your home is a great way to reduce the number of places that rodents and insects can make their nests.

Solicit advice from neighbors. They may be having the same pest problems you are. Better yet, they may have some ideas that you haven’t thought of. You might also be able to alert your neighbor to a potential problem.

Carpenter ants typically will indicate that you have a larger predicament on hand. Carpenter ants love wood that is wet; this might be a leak if you have them. Let a pro see what the issue is and how you can solve it.

If you want to tackle pest problems yourself, bring along a sample of the bugs when you go to purchase your pest-control products. This allows the professionals at the store to match the pest to the proper pesticide. Certain pesticides are effective on certain pests. You can then make sure you are utilizing the correct pest control product.

If you have pests, you probably would like to give them the boot. Exercise your power to evict them from your home. You can get rid of all the creepy crawlies in your home by using the pest control suggestions you’ve just learned.
